Rain Barrel
Installation
Rain barrels are the easiest, least expensive form of flood control that should be considered a first line of defense against basement flooding. If you have rain barrels and want to enlist the help of professional plumbers and flood control specialists to help you install them, then you may be eligible for a free installation workshop. Rob West Plumbing is looking for Chicago area residents to host a rain barrel workshop. We provide all the tools and come to your place with some other interested participants to professionally install your rain barrel system.
How We Make it
The system shown below was installed at a workshop last year at a condo on Chicago's North Side. It includes:
8 barrels (supplied for free from the MWRD) linked together to hold over 400 gallons of rainwater
Downspout diverter that will allow for water to go back to the sewer during freezing months
Screens on each barrel to keep insects and debris out
Overflow pipes to feed the garden when the barrels are full
Elevated platforms made of cinder blocks to increase the water pressure at the hose outlet. This makes it easier to water the garden in front of the building

Installing a rain barrel is a straightforward process that typically takes less than an hour. All you need is a sturdy barrel, a downspout diverter, and basic tools like a drill and a wrench. Simply connect the diverter to your downspout and attach the barrel, and you’re ready to start collecting rainwater for your garden!

Rain barrels are a fantastic way to collect and store rainwater for later use in your garden, helping reduce water bills and promote sustainable practices. You can utilize this water for irrigation, cleaning outdoor spaces, or even filling bird baths to support local wildlife. Additionally, incorporating rain barrels can help manage stormwater runoff, protecting your property and local waterways from flooding and pollution.
